ALERT: New E-mail Scam Targeting Credit Union Members
PSECU members have been reporting a new e-mail scam that targets members of credit unions. This particular scam falsely represents itself as coming from either the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). CUNA is the national trade association for credit unions and the FTC is a federal agency whose mission is to protect American consumers.
Both CUNA and the FTC have information on their Web sites about these fraudulent e-mails.
The e-mail actually states that because of a recent fraudulent e-mail attack, credit union members are asked to call a phone number (typically from a 425 area code). The e-mail states that “new security system” is being launched “to make credit union accounts more safe and secure.” To take advantage of the “new Identity Theft Protection System,” members are told their card has been deactivated and they need to call the number to have it reactivated. They are then asked to enter their card number and other personal information.
Please be aware that if you receive any e-mail asking you to disclose personal information, you should never call the phone number included in the e-mail or click on any link in the e-mail. If there is any doubt, contact your financial institution by typing in their Web address or calling their published number.
For additional information on these types of e-mails, or to report a suspicious e-mail, visit PSECU’s Security page.
