Recent Text Message and Phone Scams
By PSECU's Loss Prevention & Security Unit
PSECU is aware that fraudulent text messages and phone calls are being received by our members. The text messages and phone calls described below are attempts by fraudsters to gain access to your account information. This technique is referred to as phishing.
The following text message has been reported:
From: 8877 "Dear Credit Union Customer, we regret to inform you that we had to lock your bank account access. Please call XXX-XXXX to restore your bank account." Upon calling the fraudulent phone number, you are asked to enter your account number or card number, along with the Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Similarly, members have reported receiving phone calls or automated messages stating they must unlock their accounts by providing account information. This is an example of the reported phone messages: "Your account has been suspended. Please enter your debit card number." As with the text message, these messages should be considered fraudulent.
PSECU will not call or send you a text message asking you to provide your account number, card number or PIN. PSECU members should NOT respond to these messages. We recommend that you do NOT follow any links to Web sites included in these messages, and that you do NOT call the phone numbers given.
If you receive a fraudulent message, you can report it to the FBI at www.ic3.gov. For more information about phishing and other account security issues, visit PSECU's security center at psecu.com/security/.
