What’s the Difference Between a Credit Union and a Bank?

As a credit union, we are not-for-profit and member-owned, and we focus solely on what’s best for you. Unlike a bank, we return earnings to our members through services like free checking and low rates on loans. We want your money to stay where it belongs – with you. 

People also frequently ask how they can become a member of PSECU. We offer many ways to join.

How to Join

Here are the four paths to PSECU membership:
  • Family or those you reside with: You live with a PSECU member or a relative is a member. Qualifying relatives include:
    • Parent or stepparent
    • Child or stepchild
    • Grandparent
    • Grandchild
    • Spouse
    • Sibling or stepsibling
    • Adoptive relationships
  • Education: You attend, currently work at, or graduated from one of the many Pennsylvania colleges or universities with which we have a relationship.
  • Employment: You are a Pennsylvania state or local government employee, a municipality or school district employee, or an employee of a company that offers membership as a benefit. More than 1,800 employers across Pennsylvania offer PSECU membership. 
  • PRPS membership: If you don’t meet one of the above criteria, you can join Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society (PRPS) to become eligible for PSECU membership. PRPS membership costs $20 per year, but we will cover $10 of that when you join. You do not need to renew your PRPS membership to maintain your PSECU membership, but you may just want to.
Once you become a member of PSECU, you may remain a member for life no matter where you live. You can take us with you wherever you go.

PSECU is a digital-first credit union. That means that members can conduct all their business either online or via our mobile app. We make it easy to deposit and transfer money, apply for loans, and open IRAs and other accounts. This digital model saves us money… savings that we pass on to our members!

PSECU membership stays with you no matter where life takes you. Once you are a member of PSECU, you can keep your membership for life regardless of residence, graduating or leaving schools, or switching employers.
