Harrisburg, PA (May 29, 2019) – PSECU, Pennsylvania’s largest credit union, is proud to serve as the host and presenting sponsor of the 23rd Annual Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State Golf Tournament on Friday, May 31, at the Penn State Golf Courses. Benefiting the American Cancer Society, the golf tournament is Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State’s flagship fundraising event.
"At PSECU, we’re always looking for ways to help enhance the communities we serve – from financial education programming to employee volunteerism and charitable giving,” said PSECU President George Rudolph. “Our sponsorship of the Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State Golf Tournament is just one example, and we couldn’t be prouder of it. Our work with Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State supports the great efforts of the American Cancer Society and helps them complete their mission to free the world from cancer. What an inspiring and worthwhile goal!”
During the tournament, which kicks off with shotgun starts at 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and takes place on both the Penn State Blue Course and the Penn State White Course, each participating foursome is partnered with a Penn State celebrity for a round, resulting in an enjoyable and memorable event to support a worthwhile cause. An awards dinner in the Mt. Nittany Club at Penn State's Beaver Stadium will conclude the tournament.
The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The program leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.
Penn State Head Basketball Coach Patrick Chambers explained the Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State initiative and the Nittany Lion motto of approaching adversity with a choice: "We strive within our basketball program to reach a standard of excellence from our players, coaches, and staff. We believe the same standard, with energy and enthusiasm, can be applied to Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State to make it one of the most successful programs in the country in helping the American Cancer Society provide support. We've had challenges, as a basketball team and in our daily lives, but we always strive to meet them and overcome them. As I tell the players, if you stay focused with your attitude, you can accomplish anything. It takes a team effort to make a difference in the fight against cancer in our community and beyond, and that's our goal."
The Penn State chapter of the Coaches vs. Cancer program was one of the largest in the nation last year. It has surpassed a cumulative net fundraising total of $3 million since it was established in 1995. Additionally, Penn State Men’s Basketball Coach Patrick Chambers was recently presented with the Coaches vs. Cancer 2019 Champion Award, which annually recognizes a collegiate coach who has shown extraordinary leadership and a commitment to support the American Cancer Society’s mission.
