How to Make Money in College

College expenses can be overwhelming, even with financial aid or loans. Finding ways to earn extra income can help manage costs without overextending yourself. Finding ways to meet new people and build connections sounds a whole lot better than a “job,” which is why we’ve got a few ideas for you!

Networking Jobs for College Students

College is a time to network and meet new people. Having a job that allows you to do so can change your whole college experience, and who knows, you could make new life-long friends from a gig.

  • Barista. Working as a barista is an exciting job that’s perfect for college students, especially if you love coffee and enjoy talking to many different people. You’ll develop your skills in latte art while helping others get their coffee fix every day.
  • Retail Sales Associate. If you have an eye for fashion and a favorite store, consider working there. An added plus – most stores give employee discounts. Talk about a win-win!

College Jobs to Express Creativity

The best job to have as a college student is one that helps you find yourself and provides a way to show off your creative side. Social media makes this more and more of a need; many small businesses would love to have nice pictures that capture the whole ambiance and experience. If you’re already a regular at a nearby coffee shop or restaurant, this can be a great chance for you to show off the reasons you love it so much (no gatekeeping around here.) Allowing others to see through your perspective can really help out a business you already know and love.

  • Social Media Marketer. Let’s face it, if you’re in college, you know a thing or two about social media! Why not turn that scrolling to good use?
  • Photographer. Small businesses love when customers share why they love their business through photos. Look for jobs at local studios or check out your school’s paper or local newspaper.

Side-Hustles

Think of uncommon ways to come up with money. I’m sure you have clothes in your closet or textbooks that are just collecting dust. Thinking outside the box can be a great way to make some extra cash from items that are just taking up space.

  • Sell Old Clothes. There are a few different apps you can download to list items in your closet you no longer wear. Poshmark, Depop, ThredUp, and Mercari, just to name a few. Think of it as money just sitting in your closet, waiting to be loved by someone else.
  • Uber Eats Driver. Everyone loves a good treat, and being the one to deliver it can be a really fun way to get to know more people. It’s also a cool way to discover all the restaurants you’ve been missing out on. Maybe you’ll discover you love Mexican food—who knows!
