PSECU’s checking helps members keep more of their money where it belongs – with them. We offer free basic-style checks, and we don’t charge monthly account maintenance fees. We also provide surcharge-free ATM access at PSECU-owned ATMs and those in the nationwide network that we’re part of.
So, how do you go about setting up a checking account at PSECU? Follow this guide to ensure smooth sailing as you go through the process of opening your new account.
Documents and Identification Needed for Opening a Checking Account
Already a member? It’s easy. Simply log into your account at psecu.com and select “Add a Share” on the “My Money” page. If you’re not a member and want to open a checking account with us, you can complete our membership application online. If you attend an event we’re sponsoring at your workplace or at one of the many Pennsylvania colleges where PSECU has a Financial Education Center, you also have the option to fill out a paper application.
Here are two items you’ll need to open your account:
- A driver’s license or other valid government-issued photo identification (passport, U.S. Military ID, etc.) that includes an address
- Your Social Security number
If you’re not a member and want to set up a checking account with us (or any other credit union), you’ll also need to meet the membership requirements. At PSECU, a prospective member must fulfill one of these eligibility requirements:
- Reside in a household with a current PSECU member
- Work for a company that offers PSECU membership as a benefit
- Be a member of an association that offers PSECU membership as a benefit
- Currently attend or have graduated from a college offering PSECU membership
- Be in the immediate family of a current PSECU member (spouse, child, sibling, parent, grandparent or grandchild, including step and adoptive relationships)
If you don’t meet any of these requirements and you’re a permanent resident of PA, you can join the Pennsylvania Recreation and Parks Society to become eligible for PSECU membership.
Whether you apply at PSECU or a different credit union, be sure you’re eligible for membership before starting the application process.
Can I Set Up My New Checking Account Online?
Opening an account online with PSECU can be completed in a matter of minutes. When you open an account and are over 21 years old, you can expect the process to go fairly quickly, as long as no issues arise with your identification or the information you submit. Once you’ve been approved, you can start using our products and services, which include free access to your checking account online and in mobile banking. You should receive your debit card in a few days, as well as your checks, if you ordered them.
Opening an Account for a Minor
Do you need to open an account for a minor? PSECU offers two options for youth depending on their age. Parents can open a Custodial Account for their children as soon as they’re born. If the child is 13 or older, they’re also eligible to open an account of their own with no custodian needed. Both options require an initial deposit of at least $5 and offer a special interest rate. When completing an application for a Custodial Account, the process is very similar to opening a regular checking account.
