Summer Energy Saving Tips

Share on email Share on facebook Share on linkedin Share on twitter

As temperatures rise, your energy bill doesn’t have to follow. Relying too much on your air conditioner can quickly drive up costs, especially during peak summer months. There are simple ways to use less energy without sacrificing comfort. A few smart habits can help you stay cool and keep your budget on track.

Use Cross Ventilation and Fans

Cross ventilation is one of the easiest ways to cool your home – without touching the thermostat. Try opening windows or doors on opposite sides of your home in the early morning or late evening, when the air is cooler.

If there’s a breeze, it will move right through your space and push the warm air out. No breeze? No problem. Place a fan in a window or doorway to pull cooler air in and keep things moving.

Ceiling fans (or even a simple box fan) can also make a big difference. They don’t cool the room – they cool you. And that’s the trick. When you feel cooler, you can turn your thermostat up a few degrees without noticing much difference in comfort.

Even a small adjustment like that can help reduce how often your AC runs – and that’s where the real savings start to add up.

Keep Windows Closed and Check Seals

When you’re running your AC, keeping cool air inside is just as important as creating it. Older or poorly sealed windows and doors can let cool air escape without you even realizing it. That means your system has to run longer to keep up, using more energy and increasing your bill. In fact, heat gain and loss through windows can account for 25% to 30% of heating and cooling energy use in residential properties, so small fixes here can make a real difference.

Start simple:

    • Check around windows and doors for drafts.
    • Look for worn caulk or weatherstripping.
    • Add window coverings like blackout curtains or shades.

If your windows are older or in rough shape, replacing them is a bigger investment – but one that can pay off over time. In some cases, upgrading to storm windows can reduce heat loss by as much as 50%. It also helps to keep windows covered during the hottest parts of the day – direct sunlight can quickly warm up a room and make your AC work harder. These quick updates are often inexpensive but can noticeably improve how well your home holds cool air.

Adjust Your Thermostat Strategically

Your thermostat has a bigger impact on your energy bill than almost anything else in your home.

Setting it around 78°F when you’re home is a simple way to balance comfort and savings – and using fans can help you feel cooler without lowering the temperature further.

The real opportunity to save comes when you’re not home. Instead of cooling an empty house, a programmable thermostat can raise the temperature while you’re away and cool things down before you return. It’s a small shift that can reduce how often your AC runs – which is where your energy savings really start to build.

Maintain and/or Replace Your HVAC System

Your HVAC filter works constantly to keep dirt and debris out of your system – but it can also slow things down if it gets clogged. When air flow is restricted, your system works harder and uses more energy. By cleaning or replacing your filter every month or two during the summer, you can help improve efficiency and reduce energy use by up to 15%. If things still aren’t working as they should, your system itself might be the issue. Units over 10 years old are often less efficient – meaning they can cost more to run each month.

Upgrading your system can feel like a big step, but it can lead to long-term savings and improved comfort – especially during peak summer heat.

Upgrade Your Space and Save Over Time

Some of the biggest energy savings come from upgrades like new HVAC systems, better insulation, or updated windows – but they often come with upfront costs. If you’re planning improvements but don’t want to delay them, using your home’s equity can help you move forward now and spread out the cost over time.

With competitive rates, flexible options, and no application fees, our home equity options can help you invest in your home – improving comfort today and potentially lowering your energy costs long term.

Stay Cool and Spend Smarter

Keeping your home comfortable in the summer doesn’t have to mean higher bills. With a few smart habits and the right upgrades, you can take control of your energy use and your monthly costs.

We want to help you make confident decisions – whether you’re managing everyday expenses or investing in your home. For more tips, tools, and ways to save, explore our learning center.
