What to Consider When Shopping for a New Cell Phone

It's time to replace your trusty smartphone, and you're overwhelmed by options. You could stick with the current brand you use and upgrade to a newer model. Or you could test out another brand and see if you like that mobile operating system better.

Whatever you decide, don't forget to consider how it will impact your budget. We've compiled a few key factors to keep in mind while you're shopping around.

Is Your Current Service Working for You?

Are you constantly dropping calls or searching for a stronger signal? That might be a sign it's time to switch service providers. Doing so when you're in the market for a new phone could help you save, as many providers offer promotions or discounts on phones for new customers.

Could You Trade In Your Phone?

While you might be looking to upgrade your phone, is it still in good enough working order that someone else could use it? If the answer is yes, you may be able to trade in your phone to get a credit toward a new one.

Do You Prefer a Payment Plan or Paying Up Front?

There's no denying it - smartphones are expensive. Deciding whether you want to pay for a new device all at once or enroll in a payment plan may be the biggest factor that will impact your budget going forward. There are pros and cons to both, so you have to decide what works best for you.

Paying all at once allows you to make the purchase and forget about it. You don't have an added monthly expense to factor into your budget. Additionally, if you pay up front, you may have more options as to where you can purchase your phone since payment plans may be tied to a specific service provider. However, with the cost of smartphones, it can sometimes be too big of a hit to your wallet to pay all at once.

Using a payment plan often makes buying a new phone more financially feasible because the cost is broken up over several months or years. However, you may have to stick with a specific provider for the duration of your payment plan, meaning you can't switch if you run into issues (or may have to pay a penalty if you do decide to move to a different provider sooner).

Where Are You Comfortable Purchasing Your Phone?

There are several options for where you can purchase a new phone. You can buy one through your service provider, from the manufacturer themselves, at an authorized reseller, or from an individual who's getting rid of their own phone. Prices may vary based on where you make your purchase, and the warranty you are (or aren't) offered can differ, as well.

No matter where you purchase your phone, make sure it's a reliable company or individual and that you understand exactly what protection you're getting with your purchase.
